Healing in His wings part 2

I don’t know what you have heard about Jesus but the truth is Jesus is so good!

Mark 5 has an amazing story about a woman with a life threatening blood condition who comes to Jesus to be healed. Check out part 1 if you like as it gives a great background to this blog entry

So let’s get into it again!

Mark 5:27 She had heard the reports concerning Jesus, and she came up behind Him in the crowd and touched His cloak

Come as you are that’s the good news. Don’t wait until you get your act together. Jesus receives us just as we are, broken and all messed up, needing a healer, friend, and saviour,

Heb 4:16 tells us we can come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

It is not the throne of self achievement – If I read my Bible 4 hours today, pray hard and don’t mess up then God will…..

Jesus sits on a throne of grace.

The Law gets me to look at myself, all my unworthyness and what is wrong with me.
Grace gets me to look at Jesus – all His worthyness –what is right in me because of Jesus.

Grace carries with it the revelation that you and I are accepted by God regardless of our performance.

She touched The hem of His garment

28For she kept saying, If I only touch His garments, I shall be restored to health

The word Garment actually means tassel. It was worn on the four corners of the outer garment (tallit) in obedience to Numbers 15:37-41 and Duet 22:12 to remind the Jews of the law.

According to Numbers 15:38 the tassels (tzitzit) were attached to the corners (wings)

As a note: In Matthew 23:5 it tells us that the Pharisees (those who were confident in their ability to live righteously) wore extra long tassels to draw attention to their self righteousness.

Now why would a unclean woman touch the tassels of Jesus?

This should be the last thing a condemned, dirty , cursed woman would want to touch.
Surely it would remind her of her condition and judge her for her uncleanness.

Well here I believe is the answer

The Jews believed that when the Messiah came He would come with supernatural power in His wings. The place where the tassels were attached would become a vehicle of healing.

See Mal 4:2 But for you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.

Jesus Wings are a safe place for He fulfilled the law on my behalf.

Jesus doesn’t come to judge you, He comes to heal you

When this woman who was declared unclean and guilty touched the tassels of Jesus garment a miracle occurred. Instead of the law judging her something happened that effects you and me today in a profound way.
When she touched Jesus she got His healing and He took her pain

In the old testament if you touched someone unclean you become unclean. In the new covenant of grace the unclean person becomes clean when they touch Jesus.

Jesus became sin for you and me so we could become righteous before God. Righteousness is what humanity craves for, it is the great gift to humanity of self worth.

Jesus lived up to the exacting standards of the law on our behalf and fulfilled it. He measured up for me!

The Gospel is not about me changing so much as it is about God changing.
God has changed the way He relates to me – from Mosiac law to grace.
